My Deep Thoughts on Radiology

I had a Ceretec White Blood Cell Scan done yesterday to look for a new onset of osteomyelitis of the jaw. The radiology tech told me that he slowed the scanner down to make sure that the images were crisp and clear. He took extra head shots and then the radiologist looked at the images.

The one thing the tech didn't do was take a good history.

I saw an ID doctor later in the day and was initially told that the results were "inconclusive" and then later told it was "negative".

I will get the report and images on CD next week and come to my own conclusions.

Here's my deep thoughts on radiology...a radiology report is only as good as the person looking at the images...and sometimes their motivating factor.

If the images are of good quality then the problem should be in the image, but it has to be recognized and/or not overlooked by the person looking at it.

In physical therapy school, we would say "C = PT".  Although realistically we had to maintain a "B" average. The point was that there are people who graduate at the top of their class and others are at the bottom, but were still able to graduate. Some of those at the bottom may have excelled in some areas more than the ones at the top. You never know where your provider was in the spectrum.

I recently was told that an oral surgeon looked at a CT of my jaw and "couldn't see anything wrong". I looked at it and compared it to hundreds of images online to confirm what I was seeing. The problem is obvious and blatant. I showed it to the ID doctor too and he indicated that perhaps the socket needs cleaned out.

In regards to the CT. I feel that the oral surgeon "didn't see anything wrong" and referred me to another oral surgeon, because I am a problem he just doesn't want to deal with and doesn't know how to deal with. The sad thing is that I went to his clinic, specifically to see him because he is the only one in this area that was in-network with my medical insurance.

I don't know this radiologist's experience. I don't know if he or she have any experience with osteomyelitis of the jaw. I don't know if the person consulted with another radiologist. I don't know if they looked at the CT of my jaw that I provided, but I doubt it since I was asked where the report was.

I do know, that the radiologist didn't have a good history, but the problem is so obvious that they should have been able to see it if they had bothered to look.

What I do know is that I will get a bill for their "work" whether they made a good effort or it was rushed and shoddy...

There really is no accountability in this particular case and I am sure that they know that.

I would hope that if they lacked experience with OM of the jaw or jaw problems, that they would have tried to find someone who was experienced, but since I work in healthcare and I see the effort of those around me, I have doubts.
